The symposium aims to strengthen the partnership between the German university TU Bergakademie Freiberg and its partner universities in Iraq, Salahaddin University-Erbil, University of Technology Baghdad, Erbil Polytechnic University, University of Diyala, Koya University, Kirkuk University and Cihan University.

Focus of the symposium will be future areas of cooperation in the fields of engineering, processes, energy, materials and machinery between the universities and Iraqi and German companies and institutions.

Further topics will be internships and days of open companies for Iraqi students as well as international projects. The symposium is hosted by Salahaddin University-Erbil, Iraq, and funded by the DAAD and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.

The Faculty of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg participates since 2009 in a German-Iraqi academic partnership project in the field of Processes, Materials and Machines called Mechanical Engineering Germany – Iraq (MEGI).

MEGI has been approved  by the German Academic Exchange Service or DAAD (German: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) in 2009. DAAD aims to support the reconstruction of higher education in Iraq.  The cooperating universities in MEGI are TU Bergakademie Freiberg/Germany, Salahaddin University-Erbil, University of Technology Bagdad, University of Polytechnic Erbil, University of Diyala, Koya University, Kirkuk University and the Cihan University.
